2023 Dawns on The Somme - December News from No.fifty6

1st January, the dawn of a New Year which we hope will be filled with good times for all, and above all health and happiness. Thank you to everyone who sent us cards and festive messages and we would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. We know there are many challenges we all face in the year ahead but with friendship, kindness and love we can overcome most things. We may not be able to single handedly eradicate war, suffering, cost of living pressures, worries and loss, but extending a hand of friendship, a kind word, help to someone who is struggling, even a simple smile can make a difference for someone. And of course we will be here to do what we love best, to see guests and friends throughout 2023 - there is nothing we love more than sharing The Somme with you.
Christmas, we made it over to England for the first Christmas family ensemble since 2019. It was lovely sharing special family time especially with the very young ones who embrace the magic of Christmas (just as us oldies still do!).
So, with thoughts of Christmas swirling all around, this poem seemed appropriate. Written by a soldier that could only have been Australian with its cheerful sarcasm.
