October– we normally talk of mellow mists and fruitfulness for an October Somme. But this month the weather has been decidedly weird. Mild, sometimes wet, sometimes windy, but much sunshine and unseasonably warm temperatures which is confusing Mother Nature. 24 degrees last Saturday is just bonkers. The farmers are toiling – potatoes and sugar beet being harvested and already The Somme has a green coat of new crop carpeting its contours. There is a quality to the light in October which is vey specific to the month. Lower sun means the light is more golden, softer, as if romance is in the air and winter is being held back as long as possible. We have had some beautiful sunrises and sunsets too – also Julie’s birthday month, so what’s not to like about October?
