September 2022  - Autumn Begins, The Queen Remembered, Pilgrimages Made September – what a busy, interesting month it has been and unprecedented times with the passing of Her Majesty. We have had mixed weather this month, with some glorious warm days and also the first serious rain for months. It is clear autumn is here. As we look out of the window, the light is more golden and the fields take on a different hue.  The potatoes and sugar beet are being harvested and winter crops are now being sown. The tractors toil up and down Mash Valley, the earth once again supple and nourishing enough to nurture new crops.   

Although we have been busy here at No.fifty6 we have had the odd free hour to go and walk our beloved fields. As we walked behind Ancre British Cemetery on the tracks towards Beaumont, it brought to mind this poem written by Sir Alan Herbert.
